Dear Diary The other day, I was ...Through the World Wide Web, people are able to communication with friends all over the world. Email allows you to communicate with specific individuals. Forums allow you to communicate with groups, and you don't know exactly who will respond to your message or "post". Blogs allow you to have your own journal or diary on the web. In a previous activities, we explored email and visited a forum. In this activity, we will visit a blog. Blogs (weB LOG) are personal journals or diaries. Or, to use a techie term, a log or record of postings made by the person owning the blog. Only that person, or persons who have given the privilege to post, can post to a blog. Usually anyone can reply to the posts, although some blogs restrict the right to reply. Blogs exist for almost any topic that one can imagine. Some political blogs are having major influences in the political world. Other blogs give technical information about their topics. Many blogs give the day by day activities of the persons owning the blogs. So, lets visit a blog. - Locate a blog via a search engine. Enter the single word blog into the search field of the engine and press Enter. You will probably receive over a billion links to blogs.
- Review the descriptions of the blogs that were given by the search engine. Visit a blog of your choice by clicking on the link for that blog.
- The style of blogs varies with the individuals who created the blogs. The postings are usually organized by date, with the most recent entries given first. Read several postings in the blog. Then, go to the Archives and read several older entries. Read as many entries as you wish.
Send a short email to your instructor describing the blog you visited, including the web address of the blog (use copy & paste to put the address in your email). Think about the differences between blogs and forums, and describe your reaction to the type of communication provided by blogs.Creating your own blog isn't part of this class, but if you would like to have your own blog, the instructor will be glad to help you get it started. There are several web sites that provide free space for your blog. The one I use is http://www.blogger.com/, a site provided by Google.
