Web sites should provide convenient ways for visitors to locate pages within the sites and to move from page to page. This movement is known as "site navigation".

Methods Of Navigation

Two methods of site navigation have proven successful. Traditionally, web sites have had a "home" page that linked other pages in the site. These sites are "second generation" sites and are the ones focused on in this course.

A new method of navigation that is based on metaphors is becoming popular. Instead of a home page, these sites are built around a theme that is appropriate for the site. The site for Jimtown Store, for example, is built around the metaphor of a country store.
